KEY COPYING SERVICES

Capital Key Fob Copies provides fast, affordable, and discreet RFID key fob duplication in the DC area. Whether you need a spare for a roommate, guest, or just peace of mind, we clone compatible access fobs on-site using professional-grade tools.

About Us

Capital Key Fob Copies was founded out of necessity. Our founder needed an extra fob for her apartment so visiting family could come and go easily. When the property manager refused to issue another copy, she decided to figure it out on her own. After weeks of trial and error—learning how RFID technology works, acquiring the right tools, and mastering the technical process—she successfully cloned her own key. Word spread among friends and neighbors facing similar issues, and Capital Key Fob Copies was born. Today, we offer a safe, discreet, and affordable solution to the common problem of inaccessible key fob duplication.

How It Works

We use professional-grade RFID duplication tools to copy your fob securely and efficiently. Here's how the process goes:

  • Meet-Up: We don’t have a storefront. Instead, a technician will meet you in a mutually agreed-upon public place in the D.C. metro area.

  • Bring Your Original: All we need is the fob you want copied.

  • On-Site Duplication: The technician connects a handheld RFID reader/writer (called a Proxmark3) to a laptop, reads the encrypted data from your original fob, and writes it onto a rewritable “magic” blank fob.

  • Duration: Depending on the fob type, the entire process typically takes 10–30 minutes.

RFID Basics and the Technology Used to Copy Keys

Most key fobs use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to communicate with access control systems. Inside the fob is a chip that contains a unique ID number. Here’s a basic breakdown of how we copy them:

Reading the Data: Using a device called a Proxmark3, we scan the fob to capture its ID and any necessary authentication keys.

Analyzing the Data: On our terminal interface, we inspect the hexadecimal dump (a snapshot of the encoded memory sectors) to determine if it can be cloned.

Writing to a Blank: If the chip type is compatible, we write the captured data onto a special rewritable “magic” key fob using command-line tools.

Verifying: We compare the output of the original and copy to confirm a successful duplication.

Some keys (e.g., HID Prox, Indala, MIFARE Classic 1K/4K) are more straightforward than others, while newer encrypted chips may require advanced techniques—or may not be copyable at all.

FAQs

1 / Is This Legal?

In most cases, duplicating a key fob that you own or have authorized access to is legal. That said, it is your responsibility to ensure you are not violating any agreements, terms of service, or laws by copying a fob. We will never copy a key without your physical possession of the original, and we do not retain any customer data after the service.

2 / Is It Safe? Will You  Have Access to My Apartment?

Yes, it’s safe—and no, we won’t have access to your apartment.

Key fobs do not store any address or location data. They simply contain an ID number that works with your building’s system. Without knowing where the fob is used, it’s useless to anyone else—just like a regular key without an address.

We do not collect or store any of your key data after the copy is made. All information is permanently deleted from our devices at the end of your appointment.

We also never ask for your address or any personal details beyond what’s needed to meet up. Your privacy and security are always our top priority.

3 / What If My Copy Doesn’t Work?

We do our best to ensure the fob was cloned correctly by checking that the data on the copy matches the original. However, some access control systems may reject clones due to more advanced security features or backend whitelisting.

If your key copy doesn’t work:

  • We’ll work with you to troubleshoot it at no additional cost.

  • If we’re unable to produce a working copy, we’ll refund your payment—no hassle.

You're paying for our technical expertise and time, since the blanks can be wiped and repurposed and are relatively inexpensive.

4 / Can You Copy Any Kind of Key Fob?

Not every key can be cloned. Limitations arise from:

  • Advanced encryption (e.g., certain DESFire, iCLASS, or newer MIFARE EV2 fobs)

  • Proprietary systems that validate fobs against a remote database

  • Incompatible blank fob types (we do our best to carry multiple formats)

We can usually tell from a photo whether your key is compatible. If not, we may ask to scan the fob on-site to determine compatibility. If we can’t copy it, you won’t be charged.

5 / What Forms of Payment Do You Accept?

We currently accept the following:

  • Cash

  • Venmo

  • Zelle
